Top tips for employers

There is always plenty to think about in business. Immigration is now a key consideration for employers when it comes to their migrant staff.

  • Keep visa records and set diary dates to remind staff to renew visas at least three months before they expire.

  • If you do not have an HR professional for your employment advice we recommend you consider becoming a member of EMA (Employers & Manufacturers Association). The EMA provides great value for employers through their adviceline, a variety of training options for staff and direct input to the government to get the best for business. Read more here.

  • Accreditation expired after 31/03/2021? You can still attract and employ workers holding Talent (Accredited Employer) visas. They will need to apply for a variation of conditions to their work visa and be approved before starting in a new role.

  • Renewing passports in the Covid environment can be a nightmare. If staff have passports due to expire within the next six months encourage them to apply early for a new passport. There can be problems renewing NZ visas if passports have already expired.

  • Avoid giving immigration advice. In an effort to be helpful you may inadvertently break the law. Refer your staff to experienced and reputable licensed immigration advisers. Avoid shortcuts as they usually don’t end well.

  • Expect 2022 to be another year of rolling immigration policy changes. The Skilled Migrant Category, compulsory accreditation for employers of migrant workers, the new setting for residence categories are all on the planning board for next year.

  • Take a break over the holidays. It’s been a tough year for business and you deserve a decent rest as much as anyone to be game ready for 2022!
